Wonderful Wednesdays for adults and youth
During lent we will be studying “The Last Week: What the Gospels Really Teach About Jesus’s Final Days in Jerusalem” by Macus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan. These authors dig into the Gospel of Mark’s day by day account of the week leading up to Easter, and they discover insights into the political and spiritual dynamics of Jesus’ true passion – namely the justice of God. Since Mark is universally believed to be the first gospel written, he becomes the source of the other gospels. Mark also tells his story day by day and even hour by hour. This enables us to come to a richer understanding of Jesus’ death and resurrection.
Mel Gibson called his film “The Passion of the Christ” using the meaning from the Latin noun “passio” which means “suffering”. Borg and Crossan focus on what Jesus was passionate about – the kingdom of God. They retell a story that everyone thinks they know very well but do not know at all. They give us divergent views while each has respect and friendship for the other. Their concern is what happened more than two thousand years ago have to do with us today especially here in the United States.
Come and spend an hour a week deepening our understanding of Christ’s passion. Wonderful Wednesdays begins at 6:15 with a light supper and ends promptly at 8:00 after the service of Compline. The young people join the adults for supper and then they participate in “Kids with Purpose” while the adults study in the Gathering Place. Our study of “The Last Week” begins on Feb. 13 and ends March 19. Come and join us – all are welcome.
